The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han | Book Review
The Summer I Turned Pretty (Summer, #1)The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A sweet coming-of-age story of a young girl, teenage love and angst, and overcoming parental strife.

I have been meaning to start this series for some time now since it has become so popular, and I wanted to read the first book before watching the TV series. I know this book appears to generate polarizing opinions. People either seem to resonate with the characters or flat-out hate them. I agree with those who say the story is full of YA tropes like the love triangle and the brooding hot guy everyone pines over. The narrator does sound whiny at times, but I found this to be completely in character for a young and naive teenage girl. Her thoughts sometimes border on obsession and don't always make that much sense, but while reading this, I felt transported to my early high school years. I know there must be other women in their late 30s out there who are swooning over the forever summer crush while simultaneously banging their heads against the wall and screaming, "He's just not that into you! Move on girly!" While I enjoyed the book, I'm not sure if there needs to be any continuation of the story. I was happy with the ending and I am not looking to jump back into the rest of the series just yet.

I highly recommend the the author Jenny Han and her other series To All the Boys I've Loved Before, which I loved immensely.
